Feminism is NOT a Bad Thing!
Most of us are taught that femininity is weak, but it is the opposite of that. Femininity is strong, we bear life, we are mothers, lovers, we can anything we want to. But yet most people associate it with childish and naeve. In this video she explains that femininity needs to stop being pushed aside. She also describes as when she does push it aside and tries to have masculine energy most of the time, she doesn’t feel like herself.
Most of the time its seen as a disadvantage, but we as women and men need to see femininity as an advantage. We can think this way and be feminists, it does not mean we hate men and masculinity. There are extremists and not all feminists are this way.
The one thing I keep seeing over and over in my research of representations of femininity is the power we have to create life. We have the power to carry and create another human being inside of us. The role of women is usually seen as a mother, however we are that and more.
In order to get where we want out of society and to see us the way we want to by everybody else is to redefine the meaning of femininity. We need to redefine it as power and strength!
We have a long way to go before we can redefine our world as a persons world and a supportive community instead of a mans world. This video talks about our obstacles and reiterates just how this is apparent. Men tend to choose what they are comfortable with. If this means segregating themselves from women and choosing to be in charge then we need to make them uncomfortable and take charge, as women!
The book gives a great example of how society chooses to see women and how we must always be on our best behavior or we are not acting lady-like. “In a study of women dealing with illness, some swore as a form of emotional release, but the expression often came at the cost of losing the emotional support of others. People did not want to hear them swear” (109). This to me is unbelievable! We are people with emotions and emotions are not limited to one gender or the other. If a women decides to act out in anger, that emotion is not limited to men. We are allowed to feel that way. We are allowed to act in whatever way we want or which ever way comes naturally. Aggression is not a masculine only emotion. Just like power. Women are powerful and so is femininity!
